Hi! My name is Alamo and I’m a 22 year old Bay Quarter Horse Gelding. I’m the “head honcho” of the Three Muskateers! My career as a military working horse began in Panama as part of the 24th Security Police Squadron in April 1996. While in Panama, I was used for daily patrols of the coastline of the Air Base. My primary duty was Jungle Patrol along with my buddy, Duke. While on this patrol, my goal was to prevent penetration of Panamanians on the Air Base. The terrain was thick and treacherous. As Special Training, I was trained in criminal pursuit and attainment, as well as active riots. I was transferred to Vandenberg AFB as my second duty assignment on 23 Sept 99. While at Vandenberg AFB, I was also used for Beach Patrols, Protest/Riot Deterrent and for Crowd Control. I participated in hunting/emergency searches or any other missing persons search.
I have arthritis and the cool, damp weather at Vandenberg AFB made my legs swell up real bad and that ended my military working career. Since I came to JAMES my legs have been fine - must be that dry heat everyone talks about! If I have an off day where I’m a little stiff, Fran gives me medicine to make me feel better.
I’m not up for adoption. Fran lets me earn my keep by being the “lesson” horse for kids who come to JAMES. I have a calm disposition, I don’t spook easy and I’m the kind of horse who takes his job seriously – and I like the excitement of riding in a parade! Retirement does have it’s rewards.
Alamo has proudly served the United States Air Force and they offer him their gratitude and thanks.
